Yesterday, author Maureen Johnson had a great idea. She tweeted “I do wish I had a dime for every email I get that says, “Please put a non-girly cover on your book so I can read it. - signed, A Guy” - and so came the idea for a challenge for her 77,000 followers. A challenge that she called Coverflip.

Super cool idea; really terrible A Game of Thrones cover.

Would it be with reading? Who knows? I can safely say that Day 1 was more of a challenge than I expected, but the last two days have not been very difficult, mostly because I’ve had social activities planned for the evenings. It’s hard to miss television when you are yucking it up at a live show.

Tonight I am staying at home and relaxing, and I predict it will be difficult to resist the lure of the television. I am pretty interested in the book I am reading, though (Let the Right One In), so it should be able to hold my attention for a good while. I’m not sure what I’ll do when the weekend hits and I have two entire days of no television. Good god, will I actually go outside?

thefrogman:

I started reading “The Beautiful and Damned” by Fitzgerald, and looked forward to an evening of peace and quiet, just me, my cats, and my book(s).

It was kind of awful. I didn’t think I would miss television so much so soon. I am pretty tired when I get home from work, and I like to just lie on the sofa for a while and not think too hard and watch TV. I couldn’t do that. When I got home I saw down on my bed and sort of ended up lying down in the dark for a while, trying to figure out if I should read or do laundry. I stayed there until Mayday walked on my head, and I figured I better get up before I fell asleep.

I knew I would be bored if making dinner took too long, so I decided to just have a sandwich. It still took too long. And then the eating, something I normally enjoy, was an uncomfortable back-and-forth between looking at my food and looking at my book. Have you ever tried to read a book while eating a really full sandwich? It cannot be done. At least not by people who have fewer than three hands. Holding this sandwich so that it stayed in one piece required both of my hands, which left me nothing to turn pages with. Half way through the sandwich-eating process, I gave up on doing anything else and started to think about what I would blog about.

I read my book some more. Rygel tried a few times to chew the corners of the book. I rubbed his belly absentmindedly. That part was nice.

Then came the laundry. Even at the best of times I hate doing laundry. The arduous folding process seemed to take forever without any laugh-tracks in the background to distract me. I tried singing showtunes to Mayday, who withstood my voice much more gracefully than she ever has in the past. Feeling encouraged, I tried piling socks on her to see how high of a mountain I could make. She did not care for that.

After the laundry was done I spent about half an hour wondering if I wanted a snack. Without television, which I usually watch while snacking, I couldn’t tell if I was hungry.

What did I learn from yesterday?

it’s hard to eat and read at the same time

the Beautiful and Damned is maybe a tiny bit longer than it needs to be

watching TV makes me want to snack

that last one isn’t really a revelation, but it’s the first time that idea has really hit home.

certifiedbibliophile:

I am participating in the Bout of Books Read-athon, starting today. Only I am going to do things a little bit differently, because for me, reading lots of books is no big deal. I want this to be something different. For me the point of this week is not going to be “how many books can I read?”, but rather “can I go an entire week without watching TV?”

I watch a lot of television. I don’t feel bad about this. I love stories, and there are many wonderful stories in TV and in movies. Often I will have the TV running when I am cleaning, booking, doing something crafty, or playing games on my computer. I like the background noise. But even though I feel no shame regarding my televised media consumption, I think it’s a good idea to test yourself every once in a while and prove that no, I don’t have a problem, I can stop any time I want.

So as of midnight last night, I stopped watching TV, and I will not be watching any television, movies, youtube videos, or any other sort of motion media until next Sunday night/Monday morning at midnight. Just for good measure, I will also forbid podcasts of any sort, and I will only allow music when I’m walking somewhere. What will I do with all of that free time? Probably read a lot of books, but likely do other things as well. I’ll let you know.

For now, though, I have started F. I am going to participate in this read-a-thon!

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 13th and runs through Sunday, May 19th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 7.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. - From the Bout of Books team

I’m going to figure out what books I’ll be reading, and how many I think I can get through while still working full-time, but for now I think part of this read-a-thon will involve a ban on television for the period of one week. I watch a lot of TV, so this should be an interesting challenge.

I’m going to try to get through as many books as I can in one week, so I am soliciting for your recommendations. Please try to keep suggestions under 300 pages, and my preference is fiction but I will take non-fiction recommendations as well. To make it easy on myself, I’ll only be taking those suggestions I can find at UBC library.

So internet, what should I read?

librarianpirate:

nypl:

Was one of Brooklyn’s finest in Harlem in 1939? This Sid Grossman photo of “Harlem Loiterers” from the Prints Collection at NYPL’s Schomburg Center for Research In Black Culture has created quite a stir since being posted to the Center’s Facebook page the other day. Why? Because the man on the right looks a heck of a lot like Jay-Z (for evidence, check out these photos of Jay-Z when he visited The New York Public Library in 2011). Cue Twilight Zone music, right? Schomburg’s Curator of Digital Collections Sylviane A. Diouf found the photo while researching an exhibition, and said, “I was immediately struck by the similarity to Jay-Z and actually laughed out loud … I still hope somebody will tell us who that you man really was.”

So is Jay-Z a time traveler? Is this someone else - anyone know who? What do you think?

So Jay-Z is a Time Lord?

I would totally believe that Jay-Z is a Time Lord.

Jay is a Time Lord. It explains so much.

Doctor Jay

Wrong. Beyonce is a time lord, Jay-Z is her companion.
